The Zamboanga Information and Communications Technology (ZICT) Council successfully hosted the first Mindanao ICT Cluster (MIC) Conference last Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Garden Orchid Convention Center, Zamboanga City.
The conference is part of the cluster meetings of ICT Councils under the National ICT Confederation of the the Philippines (NICP), which was created in 2008 to be the recognized umbrella organization of ICT councils in the country.
The theme “Accelerating Mindanao ICT in the Heart of Equator Asia” also highlighted the LivEx BIMPEAGA conference and special forums with ICT-BPO industry leaders.
The event gathered different stakeholders and government leaders who are passionate in helping shape the local ICT-BPO ecosystem in Mindanao to generate jobs and improve economy.
Participants had then opportunity to network, consult and share experiences with industry players and successful technology entrepreneurs from the Philippines and BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area).
ZICT President Michael Tiu Lim expressed his hopes over Zamboanga City's target to generate more ICT-enabled jobs with all the local stakeholders working hand in hand with the local government unit led Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco, who expressed her full support to the initiatives.
NICP President Wilfredo Sa-a congratulated Zamboanga City and ZICT for having the distinction of hosting the first NICP ICT conference for Mindanao. In 2012, ICT councils in the Visayas under NICP organized VICTOR or the Visayas ICT Cluster Conference, which was was held annually. Last April, Luzon ICT Councils also held their first cluster conference.
Past NICP President Jocelle Batapa-Sigue commended the good turn out of ICT clusters in Mindanao and emphasized the goal of NICP to drive 1 Million ICT-enabled jobs to the countryside by 2022. She underscored the need for stakeholders to ensure talent supply, conducive business environment, and efficient infrastructure.
The conference was also supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Trade and Industry and other agencies. /jebs
