Filipino Math and Science Awardees Continue to Increase!

2017 YES Awardees

The country grew a record-breaking bumper crop of math and science awardees among its youth. When the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards was established in 2007, there were only 70 awardees given recognition. After 10 years, the awardees numbered 1,195. These were students who competed in international math and science competitions and won top awards.

“If the number of YES medals awarded is any indication of our future in science, I’m happy to say that it looks more than promising,” according to Dr. Josette Biyo, Director of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), the organizer of the YES Awards.

The awarding ceremonies were held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) wherein 548 awardees were given recognition. There will be other recognition events in various regional DOST offices.

DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña personally gave the Secretary’s Medal to the awardees. He gave assurances to students that the DOST will always be supportive of programs that strengthen the Science and Technology endeavors of Filipino students.

The ceremonies included national organizers of math and science competitions, school official, teachers, and parents of the awardees.

Also given recognition were the top 3 schools with regards to the number of awardees. Philippine Science High School Main Campus garnered the Gold Ribbon Award for having  278 medals with St. Jude Catholic School with 265 medals and Grace Christian College having 175 medals.
