The International Space Station |
Filipino students were able to contact and communicate with the International Space Station for the first time last February 17,2018.
The live contact was organized by the PHL-Microsat Program in cooperation with University of the Philippine (UP) Diliman together with the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI).
This has been another step to disseminate knowledge on space science and technology and also to inspire more students to become more interested in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM).
The event was held at the UP-EEEI-Meralco Innovation Hall in UP Diliman and was livestreamed via the DOST-ASTI’s website and its Facebook page.
Radio communications linked the students with the astronauts aboard the ISS.
Participants of the event were students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) and Holy Angel University in Pampanga.
The PHL-Micr5osat Program is also involved with Diwata – 1, the first Filipino developed microsatellite which was deployed in 2016. Diwata – 2 is currently in the development stage.
It is the aim of the DOST-ASTI to encourage more students to take up STEM courses and be available as a pool of science and technology professionals that will be harnessed for the nascent Philippine Space Program.
The ISS has been in orbit for more than 19 years.
